About The Growlers
The Growlers are a California-bred rock band formed in Dana Point in 2006, led by the unmistakable baritone of frontman Brooks Nielsen and anchored by the surf-tinged, psychedelic guitar work of Matt Taylor. The band built their following the hard way — relentless touring, a deeply devoted fanbase, and a string of albums that refused to be boxed into a single genre. Their sound pulls from garage rock, folk, post-punk, and classic Americana, wrapped in a hazy, sun-bleached aesthetic that gave rise to the term "beach goth," a label that stuck to the band and an entire musical movement they helped create.
Over their career, The Growlers have released a catalog of critically respected records, including Chinese Fountain, City Club — their most commercially visible album, produced by Julian Casablancas — and Natural Affair. Each release demonstrated the band's willingness to evolve without abandoning the raw, atmospheric energy that made them essential listening in the first place. Their live shows are an extension of that ethos: unpredictable, immersive, and genuinely electric. A The Growlers Variety Playhouse show in 2027 represents everything their Atlanta fanbase has been waiting for.
The Growlers also founded and headline Growlers Six, their own annual music festival in Los Angeles, which speaks to the level of cultural credibility the band carries within the independent music world. When they come to your city, it's an event.
The Variety Playhouse Experience
Variety Playhouse is the premier mid-size music venue in Atlanta, and it's been that way for decades. Situated in the heart of Little Five Points — Atlanta's most eclectic and culturally rich neighborhood — the venue holds approximately 1,000 guests and delivers an intimate concert experience that larger arenas simply cannot replicate. The sightlines are excellent from nearly every position on the floor, the sound system is refined and powerful, and the historic character of the building adds a warmth and authenticity to every performance held inside.
Little Five Points itself is part of the experience. The neighborhood surrounding Variety Playhouse is packed with independent restaurants, craft bars, vintage shops, and murals that make arriving early and exploring on foot a genuine pleasure. Pre-show options include everything from craft cocktails to some of Atlanta's best casual dining within easy walking distance of the venue's front door.
Variety Playhouse is accessible via MARTA's Blue and Green Lines — the Inman Park/Reynoldstown station is approximately a 10-minute walk from the venue, making it one of the easiest major venues in Atlanta to reach without a car. Street parking and nearby lots are also available for those driving in from outside the perimeter.
