Fox Theatre: Atlanta's Premier Dance and Performing Arts Destination

The Fox Theatre is not just a venue — it is a landmark. Built in 1929 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Fox sits at the heart of Midtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street, a few short blocks from the MARTA North Avenue station. Its Moorish-Egyptian architecture, with its soaring interior sky ceiling, ornate arches, and gilded details, creates an atmosphere that transforms every performance into a full sensory experience before a single performer takes the stage.

With a seating capacity of approximately 4,665, the Fox Theatre is large enough to host world-class touring productions yet intimate enough that every seat carries weight. The sightlines are exceptional throughout the house, and the acoustics have earned the venue a reputation as one of the finest performance spaces in the American South. For a company like Alvin Ailey, whose work demands both visual grandeur and emotional precision, there is no better home in Atlanta.

Midtown Atlanta surrounds the Fox with some of the city's best pre-show dining, cocktail bars, and cultural institutions. Fans arriving via MARTA step off at North Avenue station and walk directly into the neighborhood's energy. Parking is available in nearby decks, but the transit access makes this one of the most convenient venue experiences in the city for Atlanta theatergoers coming from every direction.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Takes the Stage

Founded in 1958 by choreographer and activist Alvin Ailey, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater stands as one of the most important and beloved dance companies in history. Based in New York City, the company has performed for an estimated 25 million people in 71 countries across six continents — a global reach matched by very few performing arts organizations of any discipline.

The company's signature work, Revelations, is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in American dance. Set to traditional African American spirituals and gospel music, Revelations is a profound meditation on resilience, faith, and joy — and it never fails to move Atlanta audiences to their feet. Every program the company brings to a city carries that same commitment to emotional truth and technical excellence.

Under the artistic direction of Robert Battle, who took the helm in 2011, the company continues to expand its repertoire while honoring Ailey's foundational vision. The dancers themselves represent the highest level of contemporary and modern dance training in the country, blending power, grace, and storytelling in ways that feel both timeless and urgently alive. Seeing Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Fox Theatre is not simply attending a performance — it is witnessing a living cultural institution do what it does better than anyone else on earth.
